Privacy Policy
Effective date: September 13, 2026
This Privacy Policy explains how AnApps LLC (“AnApps,” “we,” “us,” or “our”) collects, uses, and shares information when you use the Bup mobile application (the “App”) and related services (together, the “Service”).
Bup is a dog-care app. It helps you track your dog’s treats, calories, weight, diet, walks, and training. It is built offline-first: your data lives on your device, and only syncs to our servers for the specific features described below.
If you have questions about this policy, contact us at [email protected].
1. Information we collect
1.1 Information you provide
Dog profiles and activity. When you use the App, you create and store information about your dog(s), which may include:
- Dog name, breed, birthday, sex, and neuter status
- Weight, target weight, and activity level
- Diet plans, daily calorie goals, meal times, and free-text notes
- Treat, meal, and weight logs (timestamps, calories, notes)
- Walks (start time, duration, distance, and step count)
- Training progress and earned badges
- Photos of your dog
This is information about your pet, not human health information.
Account information. You can use most of the App without an account. If you choose to use sharing features, you sign in with Sign in with Apple. In that case we receive from Apple:
- An Apple user identifier (a stable, app-specific ID)
- Your email address, which may be an Apple private-relay address if you choose to hide it
- Your name, if you choose to share it
You may edit or omit the name and email at sign-in; Apple controls what is shared with us.
1.2 Information collected automatically
Device identity. To secure the Service without requiring an account, the App uses Apple’s App Attest to verify that requests come from a genuine, unmodified copy of the App on a real device. We store a device public key and a usage counter. This is a device identifier, not a personal identity.
Diagnostics and crash data. In App Store and TestFlight builds, we use Sentry to collect crash reports, error diagnostics, and performance data so we can fix bugs and improve stability. This includes technical context about the error, your device, and app version. We have configured Sentry not to collect your IP address or other default personal identifiers, and we do not use Sentry to track you across apps or build advertising profiles.
1.3 Location and health data
Location (only during a walk you record). If you choose to record a walk in the App, Bup uses your device’s location while the walk is in progress to measure its distance and pace. We request When In Use access only. Recording always starts from a deliberate action by you and always ends at a stop control you can see, including on the Lock Screen while a walk is running.
No coordinate ever reaches our servers. The walk data that syncs is only the walk’s start time, duration, distance, step count, how it was recorded, your device’s UTC offset, and any note you type on it. There is no route field in it, by design.
Where a path can be stored, and where it goes. The map you see while walking is drawn live. When you record a walk with your phone, the App’s route recording feature also saves that walk’s path (the list of coordinates) as a file on your device only, so you can play the walk back on a map. The file stays on the device, is never uploaded to us, and is deleted with the walk.
Walk suggestions and Apple Maps. The App also contains a walk suggestions feature that proposes somewhere to go. It sends your current coordinates to Apple to search for nearby places and to get walking directions. Apple processes that request under Apple’s own privacy policy; we do not receive or store the result. This feature is likewise switched off in the released App. If we turn either feature on for everyone, we will update this policy and the App Store privacy disclosures first.
Bup never requests Always-On location, does not track you in the background when no walk is running, and does not use location for advertising or analytics.
Health data (HealthKit). With your permission, Bup can:
- Read your walking and hiking workouts, so you can log an existing workout as a walk with your dog
- Write a walk you record in Bup back to Health, so it appears alongside your other workouts
- On Apple Watch, read your heart rate and step count during a walk you are recording, to show them on your wrist
What stays and what syncs. Your HealthKit records themselves are read and written on your device. We do not upload them, we do not share them with any third party, and we never use them for advertising or to build a profile of you. Heart rate in particular is shown live on the watch and is not saved by us at all.
There is one deliberate exception you should understand: when you choose to log an imported workout as a walk, the walk summary you created that way, including its start time, duration, distance, step count, and the workout’s identifier, which we use so the same workout is not imported twice, becomes an ordinary walk in Bup, and syncs like any other walk if you use an account. That is derived data you asked us to create, not a copy of your Health record, and it happens only for the workouts you select.
You can grant or revoke each read and write permission at any time in the iOS Health app under Sources → Bup. Revoking does not delete walks you have already logged.
1.4 Payment information
Subscriptions are sold and processed by Apple through in-app purchase. We do not receive or store your credit card or payment details. From Apple we receive a signed transaction record and derived subscription status (tier, billing interval, status, renewal date, and environment), which we use to unlock premium features.
2. How we use information
We use the information above to:
- Provide the App’s core features (tracking, budgeting, walks, training, reminders)
- Sync and back up your data across your devices, if you enable it
- Measure a walk in progress, and count it toward your dog’s daily activity
- Identify your dog’s likely breed from a photo (see Section 3)
- Enable premium sharing of a dog with other caregivers you invite
- Verify and manage subscriptions and entitlements
- Diagnose crashes, fix bugs, and improve the App
- Protect the Service against abuse, fraud, and tampering
- Comply with legal obligations
We do not sell your personal information, and we do not use it for third-party advertising.
3. How information is shared
We share information only with the service providers and people described here.
3.1 Service providers (processors)
| Provider | Purpose | What they receive |
|---|---|---|
| Apple | Sign in with Apple, App Attest, in-app purchases, App Store notifications | Identity token, device attestation, transaction records |
| Apple Maps | Nearby-place search and walking directions, only if walk suggestions are enabled (off in the released App) | Your current coordinates at the moment you ask for a suggestion |
| Fly.io | Backend hosting | Data in transit and at rest on our servers |
| Turso (libSQL) | Managed database | Your synced dog data, account, subscription, and sharing records |
| Sentry | Crash and error reporting | Diagnostics and performance data (no IP address or personal identifiers) |
| OpenAI | Breed identification from photos | Dog photos you submit for identification (see below) |
Breed identification. When you ask the App to identify your dog’s breed, the photo you select is sent to our server and forwarded to OpenAI to generate a breed guess. These photos are processed to return a result and are not used by us to build a profile of you. OpenAI processes the image under its API terms.
3.2 Other users you invite
If you have a premium subscription, you can share a dog with other people you invite by link. What they can see and do depends on the role you grant:
- View only: sees the dog’s profile, photos, and activity history.
- Can log activity: the above, plus logging treats, meals, weigh-ins, walks and training, and undoing their own entries.
- Co-owner: full control of that dog: editing its details, logging and removing any entry including yours, and deleting the dog and its history.
Everyone you invite can see the dog’s profile, photos, and full activity history, including entries made by other people. You control who you invite; invite links are single-use and expire after 7 days, and you can revoke access at any time.
3.3 Legal and safety
We may disclose information if required by law, subpoena, or legal process, or to protect the rights, safety, and property of AnApps, our users, or others.
3.4 Business transfers
If AnApps is involved in a merger, acquisition, or sale of assets, your information may be transferred as part of that transaction. We will notify you of any change in ownership or use of your information.
4. Where your data lives
Bup is offline-first, so most of your data lives on your device. When you use accounts, backup/restore, sync, or sharing, some of your data is also stored on our servers (hosted on Fly.io, database on Turso), including:
- Account, device, and session records
- Dog profiles and activity events, including walk summaries (start time, duration, distance, step count, but never a route)
- Photos of your dog (to back them up and sync them across your devices)
- Backups of your app data
- Subscription and sharing records
Storing photos on our servers means your dog’s photos are available when you sign in on a new device, and can be seen by people you share a dog with, according to their role.
Our servers are located in the United States. If you use the App from outside the United States, your information will be transferred to and processed in the United States.
Transfers out of the EEA and the UK. Where we transfer personal data from the EEA, the UK, or Switzerland to the United States, we rely on the European Commission’s Standard Contractual Clauses (and the UK Addendum where applicable) with our processors as the transfer mechanism, together with the technical measures described in Section 8. You may request a copy of the relevant clauses at [email protected].
5. Data retention and deletion
We keep your information for as long as your account is active or as needed to provide the Service. In practice:
| Data | How long we keep it |
|---|---|
| Dog profiles, activity history, photos, backups | Until you delete the dog, or delete your account |
| Account, device, and session records | Until you delete your account; sessions expire and are pruned sooner |
| Invite links | 7 days, then they expire and are removed |
| Subscription records | For the life of the account, and afterwards only as long as tax and accounting law requires |
| Crash and error diagnostics (Sentry) | Our diagnostics provider’s standard retention window, after which they are deleted automatically |
| Backend request logs | Kept only for operational debugging, and rotated out by our hosting provider |
Deleted account data is removed from our live database at the moment you ask. Copies can persist briefly in our providers’ routine encrypted backups until those roll off on their normal schedule.
Deleting your account. You can delete your account at any time from within the App (Settings → Account → Delete Account). When you do, we permanently erase your server-side data, including:
- Your account, device, and session records
- Every dog you own, along with its profile, activity history, photos, sharing grants, and invites
- Your app-data backups
- Your subscription records
Deleting your account also wipes your data from the device, including the local backup that otherwise survives reinstalling the App.
Data you contributed to dogs owned by others. If you logged activity on a dog owned by another person (for example, as an invited caregiver), that activity remains part of that dog’s history, but it is de-identified: your identity is removed and replaced with an anonymous marker. This preserves the dog owner’s records without keeping data that identifies you.
You can also delete on-device data without deleting your account by removing the App and resetting its local backup.
6. Your rights and choices
Depending on where you live, you may have rights to access, correct, delete, or port your personal information, or to object to or restrict certain processing.
- Access / correction / deletion: email [email protected].
- Sign in with Apple: you can stop sharing your Apple ID with the App from your Apple ID settings at any time.
- Notifications: the App uses local reminders only; you can disable them in iOS Settings.
- Location: revoke in iOS Settings → Privacy & Security → Location Services. Without it, Bup measures a walk with your device’s step counter instead.
- Health: grant or revoke each read and write permission in the Health app under Sources → Bup. Revoking it does not delete walks you already logged.
- California (CCPA/CPRA): we do not sell or “share” (for cross-context behavioral advertising) your personal information. You may exercise your rights by contacting us.
- EEA/UK (GDPR): our legal bases are performance of a contract (providing the Service), legitimate interests (security, diagnostics, improvement), and consent (where required). You may lodge a complaint with your local data protection authority.
We will not discriminate against you for exercising these rights.
7. Children’s privacy
Bup is intended for users 13 years of age and older and is not directed to children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child has provided us information, contact [email protected] and we will delete it.
8. Security
We use industry-standard measures to protect your information, including device attestation, encrypted connections (TLS), and storing your session token in the device Keychain. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.
9. Changes to this policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we do, we will revise the “Last updated” date below and, for material changes, provide additional notice in the App or by other means. Your continued use of the Service after changes take effect constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
